One year Ago

Wow, it have been one year since I starting this blog. Back than I was just getting out of a long-term relationship and I did not even knew at that time.  I starting this blog on May 26, 2013 the day right after my 11 year anniversary with my ex husband. At the time, I was emotionally a mess dealing with the fact that I was force to live on my own for the first time in my life.  Well, yes I got marry at 19-year-old and was living with my parents when I got marry. So at the time, I look to ways to keep my spirit up and I found it in hiking and traveling around NC natural parks. It was after spending my anniversary alone without hearing a word from my ex-husband ,which at the time he lie to me, that is when I started this blog. Yes, he lie and told me the separation was for a short period of time and he wanting me to get help. Any way at the time, I was believed the words from friends and family that he still care for me. Later it became clear that those friends was siding with him, lying to me, and digging for information.  My family were believed the lie coming from my ex husband except for my father.  When I was able to talk with my father about everything, my father supported me.

So hiking was my way of refocus my attention on having fun instead of thinking about hard reality that I were facing on not being able to see my children and losing the family life I had built up for 11 years. I had to rediscover who I was away from the mother of … and wife of … It was clean at the time, I had a hard time explaining my life to others without bring up my children and ex-husband. I enjoy hiking and taking photos so much I was able put aside  the pain and hurt for a time being.  It was a nice break from reality and it give my body time to feel at peace. Due to all the hardship I was going through it cause anxiety and depression so much I could not sleep and eat. I was able to talk with a therapist and the therapist was very impressed with measure I was doing on my own to feel better.  She said I was a strong woman and most women dealing with that level of depression would have giving up and put themselves in a home.

Now it have been a year, I am over my depression and moving on with my life. The fun adventures I had with hiking in NC had help me to get to this point.  I am a lot stronger now.  I am living with my parents again but I am working and saving up so I can be independent and not have to depend on others. I love my new life. I may not have my children but I am not going to stress out about something that is out of my control.  Instead I am focus on prepared for college to get my Ph.D. and to one day work for the EPA.  I have high goals that keep me from looking down.  I have no time to look back at my past because I am moving forward.

Fall Lake Hike with Hiking Group

On Jan. 12, 2014, I went hiking with the hiking group I am apart of.  Here are some pictures from my hike that day. I love the fact that now I am using Photoshop to edit the photo.  I am able to get more blue sky in my pictures.  On such a sunny day, most of the time my photo never turn out looking like a sunny day before I edit them.

Fall Lake hiking and Blackberry Vodka

Waiting for everyone else.

Waiting for everyone else.

I am so excellent!!! Today, I went hiking with friends at Fall Lake State Recreation Area Rolling View Trail head (part of the mountain to sea trail). It was rainy, but it was awesome! We gather in the parking lot before the entrance and begin looking for the trail.  At first the rain was light but we had our rain gear just in case.  We found the trail which is what we thought until it took us to a campground so we back track and found the right trail.

Throughout the trail, we saw some cool looking mushrooms and the cutest Eastern Box turtle. I did see a deer but it move so fast no one else saw it.

Half way, we pick blackberries.  Picking blackberries is not so easy for there is blood and the battle of tug o’ war with the thorns.  A few time, my hair got stuck and I got my fair share of cuts. It started raining again when we got to the blackberries and it rained heavy on the way back on the trail. It rain so hard on the way back, most of the trail was flooded.

I got all the blackberries I need for making Blackberry Vodka. Which I made today after hiking with my friends. It is pretty easy to make.  You just need blackberries, sugar, a jar, and vodka.  It takes about 4 months of fermentation and 5 months of aging. I will be moving in a week so it will make a great center piece for my breakfast bar.

Laurel Bluffs trail

??????????

It have been raining a lot in the past week. The trails are muddle and some areas on the trails are flooding. However, I can’t wait for them to dry out because being stuck inside sucks.  So last week I went hiking on Laurel Bluffs trail at Eno River State Park. Laurel Bluffs trail is very large , so I went on the part between the pump station and Guest Road. That part of the trail is 2.5 mile.  The river was to it maximum capability. Many of the wildlife was not around the area. However, I did see a hummingbird.  It was so fast, I only saw it once. It was fun hiking on trails that are muddling and flooding because it was a challenge to keep my shoes from getting wet and full of mud. Just another thing that keep me on my toes.

Like I say on my last post, I am learning more about mushroom.  I saw more cool looking mushroom on this hike as well as my last one.

I think the red one maybe Hygrocybe miniata. I am not sure. Well, it is hard to identify them. I am starting to thing it maybe more fun to take pictures of them and enjoy the different colors of them.  Plus they look better when there is a collection of them together. On my next post, I will have some better pictures of them.  A friend of mine told me of the macro setting on my camera that I did not know about.  Yeah, so I am still learning how to use my camera.  Well, not everyone can be good at everything at first. Hey, it is fun learning these things and it is a good laugh at the same time.

Another thing I have learned in the past week  is that I can drive up to deer and take their picture without any problem because my car does not make a sound. I have a Prius with is kind of nice in the fact it take less gas than most other cars. It is nice that the deer does not run off as soon as they see me because I am so quiet. What a day, that just made my day to see deer.  Deer are so cute.

Falls Lake Hiking and Group Camping Trip

??????????

Wow, what a fun weekend full of hiking and camping with friends I had. This weekend I went to Falls Lake State Recreation Area. First thing first, we set up our tents at the campground.  It was interest because some of the guys this was their first camping trip.  It made the camping trip excellent to show wondrous of camping to new campers. For example,  one guy did not know what a s’mores was.

Next we went hiking on part of the Mountain to Sea Trail (round trip 6 miles total). There was lots of colorful mushroom all through out the trail.  Some was asking if I know what kind of mushroom was them.  I had no idea, so it made me want to get a field guide-book on mushroom and learn more. The trail was a little muddling because it had been raining before we went on the hike.  Afterward, it was nice having showers at the camp area and the water was warm.

Later we started a fire and prepared out dinner.  Dinner was a family style where everyone brought something to share with everyone.  It was relaxing and a time for us to talk around the camp fire. Some people was louder than others while we joke and laugh sharing each other stories. It was full of stories of possum beating with crowbar, horses fighting over man in a tent, and adventures of climbing and kayaking in the dark of night.

We turn in for the night and slept in our tents.  It rain all night and thunder and light throughout the night. I still dry in my tent while I forgot to put my shoes in the tent with me.  Everyone was pretty dry through out the night; however, one person forgot to shut their window to their tent so everything in their tent was wet.

In the morning, we clean up and took down our tents. I was not feeling to well, I did not go with them on the hiking that day but say my good-bye  to everyone. It was a fun adventures that I would like to do with them again.

Croatan National Forest Oyster Point Campground

Croatan National Forest

This last weekend, I went on a camping trip at Oyster Point Campground inside Croatan National Forest.  I had so much fun on my trip.   It cost only $8 dollars per night. The host camper was really nice.  They were celebrated their anniversary and looked really happy.

The only draw back to the trip was that the bug spray does not work again horseflies. I started my first day by hiking on Neusiok trail; however I lost the trail and the horseflies was eating me alive. I spend the morning on the trail.  The trail was enjoyable in the fact that I saw wild blueberries, turtles, and wildflowers.  I did not want to spend the whole day on a 22 mile trail and get eating by horseflies, so I used my GPS on my phone and found the nearest beach.  I have never been to the beaches of NC so it was a new adventure for me.  I went to Emerald Isle Beach.  My first thought when I learn of Emerald Isle in NC was the anime seriesAvatar the Last Airbender” when Zuko and his sister and her friend went on vacation.  When the old lady twins said, “Emerald Isle a magical place when you can learn things about your self that you never knew.” Well, it did feel like a new day. The water looked as the color of emerald stones. As I sat on the beach, I could feel the saltwater air and smells of the oceans. I was able to relax and spend some time swimming.

Emerald Isle NC

As the day die down, I headed back to camp.  I set up my tent and made a fire. I had a little trouble started my fire at the beginning.  I used magnesium fire starter but it was too windy, so I borrowed some matches from the host camper.  After that I had a nice fire and I boiled some water for my ramen. As I was making my dinner, some more people came to the campground.  They were having trouble founding fire wood so I help them.  I knew where the fire wood was and I had my handle headlight to guide me. After that I put my camp fire out and when to bed in my tent.  I had trouble sleeping because the ground was hard but I was so tire that I fell asleep right away.  It was weird, I was asleep but I could heard everything going on around me.  The campers next to me was up almost the whole night and new campers was setting up their tent.

The next morning, I walked a small trail behind my camp set  that lead to the water bank.  I saw these tiny crabs and hermit crabs. The view of the water bank from there was beautiful.  There was many different birds in the distance fishing. I did not see any alligator but I heard them through out the night and the other camper was freaking out. I forget something that most people are not used to alligators.  I grow up in New Orleans, so alligators don’t scary me. They normally stay in the water or near the water unless the female alligator lay a nest. Many years ago, when I visit the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans their was female alligator guarding her nest near the waterway. That is the closest I been to an alligator.

After that I say my good-bye to Oyster Point  Campground  and heading out.  On my way back home, I stop off at another park of the National Forest.  It was much better trail to walk on for sure because no horseflies. It was loop trail and it had many good points about it.  It had plant life that I never seen before.  There was a snake on the trail; however, I did not know about it right away because a lady with two dogs was walking toward me.  The lady step on the snake and I did not see the snake until she pointing it out.  I don’t like dogs so I a little on guard when dogs come near me. It was a copperhead snake. I also saw this really cool dragonfly. There was also some nice outlook point when you can see the water from up high. At one point the path turn into a water board path when  you cross this dry up swamp.

This trip really did feel like a small vacation.  I got some sun and was able to relax. I walk some cool trails and saw many cool things. It was not terrible hot and in fact I fell cold at night.
